This vertical sign will indicate the perimeter of the low-emission zones, with the clear objective of creating a common indication throughout Spain for areas of this type before 2023.

All of the above, because by that year all municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants, those with more than 20,000 and non-compliance in air quality, and island territories must have designated low-emission zones.

Everything was reflected in the Climate Change and Energy Transition Law. This law seeks to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

What is the new sign for low-emission zones like?

The new vertical sign will consist of two parts. The upper part will have the drawing of a car with a cloud of smoke. And the lower part will have the DGT environmental badges that will be permitted in that specific area.

So, vehicles that do not have the stickers (environmental stickers) will not be allowed to enter the low-emission zone. Now, you might be wondering, how do you know which type of sticker you qualify for? Well, all you have to do is have the vehicle's documentation and the owner's documentation to purchase it.

Therefore, you must go to the DGT website, enter your license plate number, and upload a photo showing the car's registration document. Afterwards, you will be assigned the corresponding sticker.

In which cities does it apply?

Many European cities already have this sign, which they use to identify these restricted areas. Some of them are Berlin, Paris, and Brussels.

For its part, in Spain, only Madrid and Barcelona currently have a restricted area for polluting vehicles. However, each of the cities has different signs.

So, with the arrival of the new sign for low-emission zones, it will be much simpler to associate it and avoid the offense of entering a restricted zone.

You can also read: Emergency light signal V-16: implementation recommendations

The DGT has created a new sign for low-emission zones (ZBE).
