6 keys to driving in fog

When cold storms hit Spain, fogs arrive to make certain activities more difficult. For example, driving in fog becomes a very dangerous activity, which is why it is worth following some basic tips to be safe behind the wheel.

Driving in fog: use your lights correctly

This is undoubtedly one of the most common mistakes: resorting to high beams, obtaining the opposite effect (reducing visibility and disturbing other drivers). This is why the ideal is to use low beam and position lights.

In the case of fog lamps, you should know that they should not be used deliberately, the front ones are optional, but the rear ones are not. Therefore, they should be used when the fog is very dense, since they are the ones that make us visible to other drivers.

  • Increasing the safety distance

Not respecting the safety distance increases the risk of collision with another vehicle. Therefore, the best alternative is to take this precaution, together with the proper use of lights.

  • Adjusting the speed

It is normal to want to increase your speed in order to leave that foggy stretch of road behind you as soon as possible, but it is really just a bad idea. Driving at a moderate speed will allow you to react in case a car appears in front of you.

  • Caution with black ice

When driving in fog, it is very important to step on the brakes gently and thus be able to control the pulse of the wheels much better. And you can't forget that you are likely to encounter the well-known black ice (a phenomenon that occurs when the asphalt is at zero degrees) and the fog comes into contact with it. It is then when it becomes slippery and the layer of ice is so thin that it cannot be appreciated well.

  • Intermittent braking

In doing so, you can send light signals to vehicles behind you. In this way, they will be able to leave a safe distance.

  • Stay in the same lane

This is ideal when driving in fog. Avoiding any maneuvering will allow you to drive more comfortably.
